Define a Test Group to Roll Out Monitored Applications or Activities

You can limit the scope or rollout of devices which monitor a managed application. Choose either all devices in the organization, or limit the monitoring to a test group (learn more).

For example, if you added new activities to an application, you can test their behavior on a small test group before monitoring them across the entire organization.

Define a test group to monitor an application on some devices only

You can define the test group as a list of:

  • Devices with specific hostnames which run test group applications.

  • Devices with specific usernames signed in at the time they run test group applications.

  • Devices with specific locations at the time they run test group applications.

You can only create a single test group which applies to all your test activities or applications which you assign to that group. You can only create one test group for all purposes.

Important

You must choose a single criterion to define your test group, for example, hostnames only. You cannot combine categories in the same group.

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Open a browser and sign in to Aternity.
  2. Step 2 View the list of applications already managed by Aternity by selecting the Gear Icon > Managed Applications.

Aternity has several predefined managed applications, and discovers all others in use. You can add new applications as managed if they do not already appear here.

    List of managed applications
    Field Description
    Type

Displays the type of application, which can be a desktop (), web () or mobile app ().

    Application Name

Displays the name of the application as it appears in the dashboards. Select the name to view or edit its activities. It displays a lock for predefined applications, as you cannot removed or edit them.

    Process Name

Displays the name of the Windows process, base URL or package name, which Aternity is monitoring as a managed application.

    Rollout

Displays the group of devices which monitor this entry:

    • Test Group indicates that Aternity only monitors this entry for users or devices in the test group.

    • All Users indicates that Aternity monitors this entry for all reporting devices.

    Users

The number of unique users who have been running the application in the past hour. This is refreshed every minute.

    Activities

The number of business activities defined for this application.

This not a measure of the number of activities performed at present. It is only the number of defined activities for this application.

If several activities for the same application have the same name, they are counted as one business activity. For example, two Open activities, one for each version of your application, are counted as one in this field.

    Last Modified

Displays the date and time when this entry in the list of monitored applications was last changed.

  3. Step 3 To create a test group, select Test Group at the top of the screen.
Define a test group to monitor an application on some devices only
    Field Description
Select the type of objects for your group

Select the type of test group you want to create.

When you limit a managed application to this test group, only those monitored devices would report the enhanced performance data of a managed application. Other devices would report this application with only the standard metrics of a discovered application.

    • Select Hostname to choose the devices with specific hostnames as your test group.

    • Select Username to add devices to your test group whenever these usernames are signed in.

    • Select Business Location to choose all devices at these specific locations as your test group.

You cannot mix these categories in the same group.

    Tip

Enter text in the search box to limit the displayed list only to entries which contain this text anywhere in the name.

    > or <

Use the left and right arrows to add or remove entries into the test group.

  4. Step 4 Populate your test group by adding or removing entries into the right-hand pane.

To add an entry to the group, select an entry in the left pane and select the right arrow (>).

To remove an entry from the group, select an entry in the right pane and select the left arrow (<).

  5. Step 5 Select Save.
