Validate a Custom Activity for a Desktop Application

After you create a new custom activity, test it on an end user's computer in a production environment. When you validate using the Aternity Recorder, you view all of the activities captured by that version of the Agent and confirm that it reports the data from your activity to Aternity's dashboards.

For example, if you created an activity for opening the Outlook address book, upload that activity to Aternity, and distribute it to a test group. Then, on one of the test computers, run the Recorder in validate mode and perform the activity to check if the Agent is reporting the activity's performance.

Before you begin

Procedure

  1. Step 1 (For Agents earlier than 9.1.x begin here) Open the Aternity Recorder on a computer in the test group.

Go to C:\ProgramData\Aternity and double-click the Aternity Recorder shortcut. The Recorder is part of the Agent for End User Devices.

  2. Step 2 Select the validation mode.
Select the validation mode for the Recorder
  3. Step 3 Select to start the Recorder in validation mode.

While the Recorder runs, perform the activity several times, setting a bookmark each time. Bookmarks make it easy to find the activity in the validation results screen.

  4. Step 4 (Agent 9.1.x and later) Select , to view the Validation Summary.

The button is visible only after you start the recording.

The validation summary lists all of the activities detected by the Agent, and displays the measurements it collects. It also displays the incomplete activities, and which event ended the activity. Use the summary to see if the Agent is capturing the data you require for your application.

    Tip

During validation the Agent runs more processes than usual, so there are likely to be delays between performing the activity and seeing it in the summary.

    Users

    Select to filter by user.

When measuring performance for applications running on virtual application servers, filter to see the data for only one user.

Expand the results to see the measurements.

Expand each result and see the activity response time

Other results are more detailed, such as those for launching Outlook, which include network and server information.

Some activities include server and network data
  6. Step 6 (Agents earlier than 9.1.x). Perform the activity on the test group computers, and check that the performance results appear in the User Experience dashboard.
    Important

    The completed activity:

    • Should match only the exact activity you want to analyze.

    • Should capture every completed activity.

  7. Step 7 Distribute the new activity to all of the Agents in your organization. Learn more.
