View the List of Managed Applications

A Power User of Aternity can view, configure, or add applications to be managed by Aternity to add more performance monitoring for those in this list.

A managed application has enhanced monitoring over a regular discovered application, because it adds default activities which track its launch times, resource consumption (PRC), and you can further add your own custom activities. Regular discovered applications only monitor the default performance measures, like application health, UXI, wait times and so on. You can add any application to be managed: Windows desktop applications, web applications, or mobile apps (iOS and Android), running locally or in virtual environments.

The default applications with monitored activities

Aternity comes with default predefined activities for popular applications, including Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, PowerPoint, Excel, all in English), and Citrix WorxMail for mobile devices. By default, Aternity monitors the resource usage of popular web browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer v9, 10, 11 and Google Chrome) to monitor web apps which run inside them.

To... Do This...

To add activities to a desktop application, to automatically monitor its launch times, its CPU and memory consumption on devices, and to add custom activities

Add the desktop application to the list of managed applications. Select Add Application > Desktop Application, and follow the steps in Add a Windows Desktop Application to be Monitored

To assign a different display name to a discovered desktop application

To add a web (cloud) application for its activities to be monitored in Aternity

Select Add Application > Web Application. See Add a Web (Cloud) Application to be Monitored.

To merge several URLs into a single web application

To add a mobile app for its activities to be monitored in Aternity

To add monitoring to a mobile app, you must embed Aternity's monitoring into the app itself, before it is encrypted. This automatically starts reporting a wealth of performance and usage data by default. See Add a Monitored Mobile App as a Managed App to Monitor Custom Activities.

To define a test group to roll out monitored apps to a limited set of users

Select Test Group in the top bar. For more information see Defining a Test Group to Roll Out Monitored Applications.

To edit a web application's activities to associate a specific web page load to an activity name

Select the ellipsis (...) on the row of a web application and select Edit Web Activities. For more information, see Assign Activities to a Monitored Web Application (WPM).

To start or stop collecting performance data for an application

Select the Play or Stop button for that application.

Select Add Application to add any of the following types of applications for monitoring:

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Open a browser and log in to Aternity.
  2. Step 2 Select the Gear Icon > Managed Applications.
  3. Step 3 View the list of applications already managed by the system.

    Aternity monitors several common Windows applications as managed applications, and discovers all others in use. You can add new Windows applications as managed if they are not already listed here.

    Field Description
    Application Name

    The name of the application as it appears in the dashboards.

    Type

    Displays the type of application, which can be a desktop, web or mobile app.

    Users

    The number of unique users who have been running the application in the past hour. This is refreshed every minute.

    Activities

    The number activities which are defined for this application.

    Note

    This not a measure of the number of activities performed at present. It is only the number of defined activities for this application.

    Rollout

    Displays the group of devices which report this application's performance:

    Last Modified

    Displays the date and time when this entry in the list of monitored applications was last changed.

    Stop / Start

    Select to either start or stop collecting performance data for this application.

    ... (Ellipsis)

    Select the ellipsis to open a menu to configure the monitoring of this application:

    • Edit Application changes the application's display name and process name (for Windows desktop applications) or base URL (for web applications).

    • Edit Page Load Activities (web applications only) enables you to associate an activity name to the load times of specific web pages.

    • Remove Application removes this application from those monitored by Aternity.

    Note

    If you edit an application's properties, the dashboards present new data under the new name, but old data remains stored under the previous name for up to 24 hours from the change. After that, all the data is merged and presented under the new name.
