Add a Windows Desktop Application to be Monitored

You can enhance the monitoring of any Windows desktop application by adding its process name as a managed application, including 32-bit, 64-bit, Java (32-bit and 64-bit), system utilities and so on.

Aternity comes with default predefined activities for popular applications, including Acrobat Reader, Microsoft Office 2007, 2010, 2013 and 2016 (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, PowerPoint, Excel, all in English), and Citrix WorxMail for mobile devices. For a comprehensive list of predefined activities, see View Data Monitored by Aternity.

By default, Aternity monitors the resource usage of popular web browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer v9, 10, 11 and Google Chrome) to monitor web apps which run inside them.

After you add an application for monitoring, the system immediately starts receiving reports of the application's performance and usage from monitored devices which are running that application. You can view the performance data on the system's dashboards.

Add a Windows application for monitoring

The system automatically monitors the application launch time, and in addition, it tracks the following metrics:

  • CPU usage of the application's process

  • Memory usage of the application's process

  • Application crashes or is not responding (hangs)

You can define your own custom activities for desktop applications, web applications or mobile apps, to view their performance in the system.

When adding a desktop or web application to be managed, you can choose to monitor its performance on all devices in the organization, or limit the monitoring to a test group.

Before you begin

Before adding an application to Aternity, verify the following:

  • Verify the access rights and privileges for your user includes Edit Configuration privileges.

  • We recommend that at least one device in your organization is a monitored device, running the Aternity Agent, which gathers performance and usage data. See more on deploying the Agent on devices in your organization.

You can only monitor applications on computers which have the Aternity Agent.

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Open a browser and log in to Aternity.
  2. Step 2 Select the Gear Icon > Managed Applications.
  3. Step 3 View the list of applications already managed by the system.

Aternity monitors several common Windows applications as managed applications, and discovers all others in use. You can add new Windows applications as managed if they are not already listed here.

    List of managed applications
    Field Description
    Application Name

The name of the application as it appears in the dashboards.

    Type

Displays the type of application, which can be a desktop, web or mobile app.

    Users

The number of unique users who have been running the application in the past hour. This is refreshed every minute.

    Activities

The number activities which are defined for this application.

    Note

This not a measure of the number of activities performed at present. It is only the number of defined activities for this application.

    Rollout

Displays the group of devices which report this application's performance:

    Last Modified

Displays the date and time when this entry in the list of monitored applications was last changed.

    Stop / Start

Select to either start or stop collecting performance data for this application.

    ... (Ellipsis)

Select the ellipsis to open a menu to configure the monitoring of this application:

    • Edit Application changes the application's display name and process name (for Windows desktop applications) or base URL (for web applications).

    • Edit Page Load Activities (web applications only) enables you to associate an activity name to the load times of specific web pages.

    • Remove Application removes this application from those monitored by Aternity.

    Note

If you edit an application's properties, the dashboards present new data under the new name, but old data remains stored under the previous name for up to 24 hours from the change. After that, all the data is merged and presented under the new name.

  4. Step 4 Select Add Application > Desktop Application.
Add a desktop application for monitoring
  5. Step 5 Enter the details of the Windows application to be monitored.
Enter details of the desktop application for monitoring
    Field Description
    Application Name

Enter the name of the desktop application as you want it to be displayed in Aternity.

    Process Name

Enter the exact process name of the application as listed in the Windows Task Manager. To monitor more than one Windows process in the same monitor, see Add Multiple Process Names to a Managed Application.

    Deploy to

Choose the group of devices which should report performance data for this application:

  6. Step 6 Select Save.

The system confirms that the application was added successfully.

You can expect to start seeing performance data in the dashboards within 10 minutes. For example, go to the Monitor Application dashboard to view the launch times and CPU and memory usage of the application (see console_dsh_mon_app.dita#concept_h4b_kxl_2t).
