Manually Deploy Chrome Support for Monitored Web Applications (Aternity Extension for Chrome)

To monitor web applications which run in the Google Chrome browser, the Agent setup automatically deploys the Aternity Extension for Chrome to all devices in the organization for monitoring web applications in that browser.

Setup deploys this automatically from Agent 9.2.x or Agent for Mac 2.4. However, it requires that the device is part of the enterprise's domain, and it can download from the Chrome Web store. Just restart Chrome to automatically start monitoring web applications.

As for Legacy Agents, if your enterprise blocks access to the Chrome Web store, or a device does not belong to your company's network, you need to deploy it manually using Group Policy Object.

If you have experience in Group Policy Object (GPO) distributions, you can deploy this from the group policy management tool which you normally use in your enterprise. The Chrome extension is called the Aternity Information Systems Extension. While you can use any GPO distribution tool, this article describes the procedure using the standard Windows tool.

Monitoring web applications running in Chrome with the Aternity Extension for Chrome

Before you begin

  • Monitor any web application in any version of Google Chrome released in the past two years. For legacy Agents (on Windows until Agent 9.1.x or on Mac until Agent for Mac 2.3), you must also manually add the Aternity Extension for Chrome to monitor web page load events (WPM) and usage. Without this, Aternity only monitors clicking a link, back, forward, direct URL, HTTP GET and POST events.

  • Below procedure is relevant for Agent v8.0.x or later, and until Agent 9.1.x

  • Below procedure is relevant for Agent for Mac v2.3 or later, and until Agent for Mac 2.3

  • If the device is not part of a domain, you install the extension using a direct link to the Google Chrome store.

  • Some organizations may use different distribution policies and not Group Policy Object (GPO), in this case they install the extension using a direct link to the Google Chrome store.

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Test the setup on single computers (Macs or PCs).

On a single PC, in Google Chrome's in-window menu, select > More tools > Extensions > Get more extensions. Search for Aternity, then add the extension to your browser.

In the Google Chrome Store, there are separate versions of the Aternity Extension for Chrome for Agent for End User Devices v8.0 and v9.0.x & 9.1.x.

    Additional versions for reference: 9.2.0, 9.2.1, 9.2.2, 9.2.3, 9.2.4, 9.2.5, 9.2.6, 11.0, 11.0.1, 11.0.2, 11.0.3, 12.0, and 12.0.2, 12.0.3, 12.0.4, 12.0.5, 12.0.6, and 12.1.0. To manually add the extension on a single computer, follow the link and select Add to Chrome.

    Tip

Agent for Mac 3.0 uses Aternity Extension for Chrome 9.2.2. Agent for Mac 3.1/3.2/3.3 uses Aternity Extension for Chrome 9.2.5.

  2. Step 2 For Windows PCs, download the Chrome policy template from http://www.chromium.org/administrators/policy-templates in the format used by your group policy management tool (ADM, ADMX or other type).
  3. Step 3 Add the template to the group policy management tool which you normally use:
    1. a Right-click the folder which would house the template.
    2. b Select Add/Remove Templates.
    3. c Select Add.
    4. d Browse to the downloaded template file and add it.

    7. g As part of that setting, select Show to open the options.
    8. h Add the following string in its entirety to the list of values:

Configure the Chrome template for distribution
  4. Step 4 Deploy the extension to the appropriate group of devices using your group policy management tool.
  5. Step 5 To verify the extension is deployed on a device:
    1. a View the deployed extensions on a device's Chrome browser (chrome://extensions), and verify it shows the Aternity Extension.
Verify successful deployment on an end user's device
    2. b View the policy (chrome://policy), and verify it appears with a status OK.
Verify the status of the extension is OK on an end user's device

If the status displays list entry 0 value does not match format, delete and retype the semi-colon (;) in the string you pasted earlier in the Group Policy Management tool, to ensure it was pasted correctly.
