Manually Deploy MS Edge Support for Monitored Web Applications (Aternity Extension for Microsoft Edge)

To allow monitoring of web applications which run in the Microsoft Edge Chromium-based browser, the Agent setup automatically deploys the Aternity Extension for Microsoft Edge to all devices in organization. The devices should be part of the enterprise's domain, and should be able to download from the Aternity Web store. Just restart Microsoft Edge to start monitoring web applications.

If the enterprise blocks access to the Aternity Web store, or a device does not belong to the company's network, deploy it manually using Group Policy Object (GPO).

This article explains how to mass deploy the Aternity Extension for Microsoft Edge on Windows devices. It also mentions how to deploy the extension on a single device.

Monitoring web applications running in Edge with the Aternity Extension for Microsoft Edge
Note

Aternity does NOT deploy the extension automatically in case the Edge local policy file (json) exists.

If you have experience in Group Policy Object (GPO) distributions, you can deploy this from the group policy management tool which you normally use in your enterprise. The extension is called the Aternity Extension. While you can use any GPO distribution tool, this article describes the procedure using the standard Windows tool.

Before you begin

  • Aternity Extension for Microsoft Edge is necessary for monitoring web applications in MS Edge, including web page load events (WPM) and usage. Without this, Aternity only monitors clicking a link, back, forward, direct URL, HTTP GET and POST events.

  • Make sure you use Microsoft Edge 88.0 or later.

  • This article applies to Agent for End User Devices 12.1.x or later. Make sure you deploy the correct version. (Earlier Agents do not support Microsoft Edge.)

  • If the device is not part of a domain, you install the extension using a direct link to the chrome store.

  • If the enterprise blocks access to the Aternity Web store, or a device does not belong to the company's network, deploy it manually using Group Policy Object.

  • Some organizations may use different distribution policies and not Group Policy Object (GPO), in this case they install the extension using a direct link to the chrome store.

  • You can verify that the extension is already auto deployed on a PC. On a single PC, in Microsoft Edge's in-window menu, select > Extensions and verify there is the Aternity extension under Installed extensions.

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Test the setup on single PCs.

On a single PC, in Microsoft Edge's in-window menu, select > Extensions > Get extensions for Microsoft Edge. Search for Aternity and then click Get to add the extension to your browser.

In the web store, there are separate versions of the extension for Agent for End User Devices 12.1.1.13, and 12.1.2.90. To manually add the extension on a single computer, follow the link and select Get.

  2. Step 2 For multiple Windows PCs, download the Edge policy template from https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/configure-microsoft-edge in the format used by your group policy management tool (ADM, ADMX or other type).

Go to the Microsoft Edge Enterprise landing page to download the Microsoft Edge policy templates file (MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.cab) and extract the contents.

  3. Step 3 Deploy the extension using the GPO: add the template to the group policy management tool which you normally use. Learn more.
    1. a Right-click the folder which would house the template.
    2. b Select Add/Remove Templates.
    3. c Select Add.
    4. d Browse to the downloaded template file and add it.
    5. e Navigate to Microsoft Edge > Extensions.
    6. f Open the setting Control which extensions are installed silently and change its value to Enabled; do NOT select OK.
    7. g As part of that setting, select Show to open the options.
    8. h Add the following string in its entirety to the list of values:
      Field Description

      Agent 12.1.1.13

      gbbcfebnlgffjpooafbpcanmgoaeckaf;https://chromestore.aternity.com/update/crx

      Agent 12.1.2.90

      appakbgoepkealbaehmcnhkhjnnbnmki;https://chromestore.aternity.com/update/crx

      Tip

We recommend to copy and paste this text via a plain text editor to avoid any hidden or non-printed characters during the paste operation.

    9. i Deploy the extension to the appropriate group of devices using your group policy management tool.
  4. Step 4 To verify the extension is deployed on a device:
    1. a View the deployed extensions on a device's Edge browser (edge://extensions), and verify it shows the Aternity Extension.
Verify successful deployment on an end user's device
    2. b View the policy (edge://policy), and verify it appears with a status OK.
Verify the status of the extension is OK on an end user's device

If the status displays list entry 0 value does not match format, delete and retype the semi-colon (;) in the string you pasted earlier in the Group Policy Management tool, to ensure it was pasted correctly.
