Validate your New Aternity Database

Use the Aternity Database Verification Utility after you installed the Aternity database, to check that its structure is compatible with Aternity on-premise 10.x.

Use the Aternity Database Verification Utility to ensure the database is ready for Aternity 10.x

For a fresh installation (only), you can run this utility on the computer containing the Oracle Database Server, or from any other computer which has access to the Oracle Database Server.

This tool requires that you enter the database's username and password with SYSTEM privileges.

Important

When you upgrade Aternity (not clean install), the way you use this tool is different (learn more).

Before you begin

  • Download the latest Aternity on-premise's main setup package from the Riverbed support site by selecting Software (size).

  • Complete setting up the Aternity Oracle Database Server.

  • Ensure you have local administrator privileges on this computer.

  • Ensure you have a username and password to the Oracle database which has SYSTEM privileges. If you cannot obtain SYSTEM credentials, contact Customer Support for a script which your DBA can run separately.

  • To run this utility from a different computer, your Oracle Database Server must have a Listener (the express database setup does this automatically). Learn more by searching about adding a Listener in Oracle's documentation.

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Locate the Aternity Database Verification Utility, DBVerfication_windows-x64.exe, which you downloaded as part of the Aternity on-premise server setup package.

You must run this from another computer (not the Oracle Database Server).

To run this utility from a different computer, your Oracle Database Server must have a Listener (the express database setup does this automatically). Learn more by searching about adding a Listener in Oracle's documentation.

  2. Step 2 Launch the Aternity Database Verification Utility.

Right-click DBVerfication_windows-x64.exe and select Run as administrator.

  3. Step 3 Choose a destination directory to install, then proceed.
  4. Step 4 For a fresh install only, you only have one choice to select Verify database settings and privileges.
For a fresh installation, you can only run one script
  5. Step 5 Enter the details required to connect to the Aternity database to verify its compatibility.

If your database already has the ATERNITY schema, you can optionally check its validity here. If you do not yet have the schemas, deselect Verify Platform Database Credentials. The setup of a new Aternity Management Server offers to automatically create the database schemas at that time.

Enter connection details to the Aternity database
    Field Description
    Username / Password

Enter the username and password of the database. This must be the username that has SYSTEM privileges.

    Database Host

Enter the FQDN, hostname (recommended) or IP address of the Oracle Database Server.

    Port

Enter the port required to access the Oracle Database Server (default is 1521).

    Service

Enter the Oracle database service name (usually Aternity). This is the alias to the instance of the Aternity database.

    Verify Platform Database Credentials

If your database already has the ATERNITY schema, you can check its validity here. If you do not yet have the schemas, deselect Verify Platform Database Credentials. The setup of a new Aternity Management Server offers to automatically create the database schemas at that time.

For example, select this ONLY if you already created the schemas for the Aternity database. Do NOT select this if you had set up the database with the express setup of the Aternity Oracle Database, or if you have not yet installed the schemas in the database.

    Platform Database Username

If your database already has the schema set up, it would automatically detect and display ATERNITY as the schema name which you are checking.

  6. Step 6 Select the size of your deployment.

The parameters of the database are different depending on the size of your deployment, measured as the number of monitored devices. You must choose the same size in this screen and in the same screen during the setup of the Management Server.

During an Oracle Database Server update, the tool displays this screen and the sizing selection only if you selected Verify Database Settings and Privileges.

The database parameters depend on the intended size of the deployment
  7. Step 7 View the compatibility report.

You can copy to the clipboard, or view the location to find the report as a plain text file.

View the report of database compatibility
  8. Step 8 Check the report for errors and fix before continuing with your Aternity on-premise deployment.
