There are many ways to backup your data. Data backup can help you protect and restore your data when something goes wrong. Select the best option for your organization.

In addition, every time you update your Aternity deployment, create a backup of the dashboards you saved.

Various Backup Options

Backup

A data backup is the process of copying files and folders for the purpose of restoring them in case of data loss. Backup files can be stored on the same server or copied to a different one.

Redundancy

Redundancy is the duplication of nodes.

The level of failure tolerance is a value known as K-safety (or K-safe)K-safety=1 indicates you maintain availability when one node fails.

High Availability

High availability ensures an agreed level of operational performance, usually uptime, for a higher than normal period. For example, adding a dual UPS adds high(er) availability to power systems. This implies the system is resilient enough to survive a disaster. Implementing high availability on its own, however, does not achieve disaster recovery.

Install a Vertica cluster for performance and high availability

Since the Aternity Dashboard Server connects to only one Vertica Database Server, if that server fails, it cannot connect to any servers in the cluster. Therefore you should connect the Dashboard Server to a load balancer to ensure high availability.

Disaster Recovery (hot recovery)

Disaster recovery is the process that allows your organization to continue computer and network operations in the event of a computer or equipment disaster.

You can create an entire standby data center site which is ready to spring into action if your main site becomes unavailable, also known as hot recovery.

Data replication involves storing the same data on multiple storage devices according to scheduling algorithms. It ensures consistency between redundant resources, such as software or hardware components, to improve reliability, fault-tolerance, or accessibility.

Aternity recommends to backup the data so that all company data is available regardless of whether a hot standby site or main site is used.

The strategy of backing up Aternity on-premise servers focuses on keeping only the dynamic data which is valuable to you and hard to replace. For most Aternity servers, their data is easily repopulated after a restore, and therefore do not need a backup.

We recommend backing up only the following Aternity on-premise servers:

  • Local usernames and passwords (encrypted).

  • User privileges, roles, and preferences.

  • System settings.

Perform incremental backup daily plus a full backup every week.

Important

You must enable the archive log by switching on the Oracle FORCE_LOGGING setting.

Aternity Management Server

  • Several crucial static files required for database disaster recovery, which must be backed up.

  • Aternity quickly repopulates the performance baselines after a restore.

After every Aternity upgrade, backup the disk image.

Aternity Dashboard Server

If users saved their own custom dashboards, you can create a backup (see below).

Create a scheduled execution of the command line regularly (daily or weekly according to your requirement).

Aternity Vertica Database Server

The Aternity Vertica Database Server stores the performance data in the Vertica format, which is most efficient for displaying in Aternity dashboards.

  • Perform an incremental backup daily. You can keep the backup files on that same server or copy them to another machine. Learn more.
  • Prepare Aternity Vertica Database Server for high availability. Learn more.
  • Implement disaster recovery for your deployment, and if the whole site fails, switch to the hot standby. Learn more.

Customized and saved dashboards

The Agent for End User Devices reports data to Aternity once every minute. If its status becomes disconnected and it cannot send data after trying for five minutes, it locally stores up to 50 minutes of retention data in offline mode, and then sends it when it renews its connection.

Create a Backup of your Saved Dashboards

You can save and share a customized dashboard, to revisit it any time in the Main Menu. To save, share and subscribe, you first view a dashboard, customize it, then share with people and subscribe someone to regular email updates, and finally you save it. (Learn more)

Subscribe and share a dashboard
To create a backup of saved dashboards, do the following:
  1. Open a browser and sign in to Aternity.
  2. Select the Gear Icon > Advanced Tools.
  3. In the left pane, Tableau section, select Backup and restore.

  4. Select Download backup of saved Dashboards, then a location to save the archived dashboards backup file, and then select Save.
  5. To restore, follow steps 1 through 3 as written above, and then Select a file to upload (or drag and drop the archived backup saved dashboards file) and then select Restore saved editable dashboards.
