Compare Application Performance on Different Device Types (Device Type Comparison)

Use the Device Type Comparison dashboard to compare the performance of an application in different types of environments.

For example, if you moved an enterprise application (like your custom banking application) to a virtual desktop (VDI) deployment, you can compare the end user performance between regular desktops versus the VDI desktops.

  1. Step 1 Open a browser and log in to Aternity.
  2. Step 2 Select Main Menu > Validate > VDI Migration.

  3. Step 3 Select the scope of the data displayed in the dashboard.

    This dashboard compares the performance of a single application in two different deployments.

    Field Description
    Select the type of VDI migration

    Select one of the following:

    • From desktop to VDI compares a single application's deployment on a regular desktop computer to its deployment on a virtual desktop.

    • From Citrix XenApp to VDI compares a virtual application's performance to its deployment on a virtual desktop. Aternity only supports virtual applications on Citrix XenApp.

    Select the application

    Select the application whose performance you are comparing. This dashboard only compares the performance of a single application. You can later switch to another application in the dashboard by selecting the Application menu at the top of the screen.

  4. Step 4 Compare the performance of an application in different deployments or device types in the Activities section.

    This section compares the average activity response times for every monitored user activity in this application on the two different deployments or device types. You can validate the migration from any of the device types in the Compare drop-down menu to any type of device in the To menu in the top right corner of the dashboard, so long as the application was installed on both deployments.

    Select to view the absolute value or the percentage of the change. Most often, you need both., because a global improvement of the response time of two seconds, means a different percent change in each activity.


    These bars are not color-coded since they only show the change in measurements, without requiring that one deployment occurs before the other. Therefore, depending on your perspective, the change might represent a worsening or improvement.

    Displays the name of the monitored activity within the application.

    Left column (like Desktop)

    Right column (like Virtual Desktop)

    These columns display the activity response times of two deployment types, as per your selection in the top menu bar of the dashboard.

    The left column corresponds to the Compare menu at the top of the screen. This value is also displayed as a horizontal bar.

    The right column corresponds to the To menu at the top of the screen. This value is also displayed as a vertical line.

  5. Step 5 Hover your mouse pointer over the horizontal bar to see the exact volume of activities and the average response time recorded in each deployment.

    You can also drill down to the Troubleshoot Activity dashboard, to troubleshoot the performance of a single activity.

  6. Step 6 Compare the normalized percentage change in response time of the same application in different departments or locations, or on different virtual application servers, in the lower left section of the dashboard.

    See, for example, in which department the migration from desktops to laptops caused an improvement in the response time of different applications or activities, or if the migration of an application from one application server to another produced an increase in the response time.

    For example, if you find that the the virtual deployment's performance in the Sales department is much slower, you can focus troubleshooting on the difference in the computers or networks of this group.

    Field Description

    Displays the departments which use the application.

    Application Servers

    Displays the servers on which the application runs. It can be the server IP, the server hostname, or the server DNS name.

    Business Locations

    Displays the locations where the application runs.


    Displays the countries of the locations where the application runs.


    Displays the geographical states of the locations where the application runs.


    Displays the cities of the locations where the application runs.


    Displays the versions of the application which run.

  7. Step 7 Compare the activity statuses of the two types of deployments of this application over time, in the Trends section.

    This can offer you an insight into whether the statuses are better or worse overall, and to determine if a dip in performance at a certain time is reflected in both types of deployments.

    In the figure below, desktop deployments of this application suffer from a steady 4% of activities with a status of Major (orange) while the virtual desktop (VDI) deployments of this application do not have this problem (all yellow).

    Hover over any point in the recent trend to view the total volume of activities monitored at that time, and the exact percentages of each activity status.


    By default, the system displays only the statuses which are not Normal (Exclude Normal in the drop-down menu), hence you do not see the full picture up to 100% of the statuses. To display all statuses, including Normal, select the drop-down menu on the top right of this section, and select All.

  8. Step 8 View the comparison between the average statuses of the two deployments during the timefame of the dashboard, in the Status section.

    If, for example, you partially migrate from desktops to virtual desktops and you see that the application has no Major statuses on virtual desktops, you can continue the migration.

  9. Step 9 View the changing response times in each deployment over the dashboard's timeframe, select an activity. It displays an additional Value graph in the Trends section, showing how the performance of this activity changed over time.

    The purple line represents the recent response times in seconds on the left deployment, while the blue line represents the right column. You can also see the data in the other sections focused on that single activity.

    Similarly, you can view the data in this dashboard for a single department, location, or application server.

  10. Step 10 You can limit the display of this dashboard using the menus at the top of the window.
    Changing the application, timeframe, or deployment type
    Field Description

    Choose the start time of the data displayed in this dashboard.

    You can access data in this dashboard (retention) going back up to 30 days. This dashboard's data refreshes every hour.


    Select a monitored application to display its activities in this dashboard.


    Limits the display of the dashboard to one or more specific activities.



    For a single application, select the two deployment types which you want to compare in this dashboard. For example, you may want to compare an office application between local installations on PCs versus a VDI implementation.
