Getting Started with SteelCentral Aternity™ on-premise

SteelCentral Aternity™ monitors the performance of applications and devices from the end user perspective, so you can measure and improve the productivity of your workforce. It monitors your digital experience on the device by installing a lightweight Aternity Agent, which runs in the background on all monitored devices in your organization. Our presence on the end user's device (not remotely on a server) offers unique insights into the performance delays of applications and devices as the users themselves experience them.

SteelCentral Aternity™ presents end user experience in intuitive powerful dashboards

Aternity builds this end user picture of efficiency across your entire organization by measuring the performance of all applications, like their activity response times, or wait times, and combines the performance of devices, like their boot times or resource usage, and displays them using simple, powerful, and intuitive dashboards. Displaying this real-time information enables IT teams to proactively troubleshoot issues, by exposing delays and problems from the end users' viewpoint.

Aternity's unique value correlates application performance, device health and user productivity in a single product

Aternity monitors the performance of Windows devices (laptops, desktops, tablets), mobile devices (iOS, Android) and virtual sessions (VDI and virtual applications).

While monitoring performance, Aternity is careful to respect the privacy of end users. It does not store the contents of documents, emails, or text messages. It shows the performance of only business-related web applications (in the white list), or mobile apps which you specially embedded with Aternity functionality. It also gathers data about each device, location, and user to help you spot wider patterns of slow performance. For example, you can see the same slowdown for everyone in a department or location, or on all devices with low RAM. But if you want to enhance privacy further, you can enable privacy mode to encrypt all user specific information (like hostnames and usernames).

Although traditional APM products provide some aspects of End User Experience Monitoring, IT Ops teams can be blind to what their users actually experience as they use the full range of business critical applications every day.

It's easy to start monitoring the performance of applications in Aternity. Start by installing the Aternity Agent on one or more devices, and then immediately start viewing the performance of popular enterprise applications from the end user perspective in Aternity's dashboards.

Getting started with Aternity

Procedure

  1. Step 1 Contact Customer Services to download the latest version of Aternity on-premise.
  2. Step 2 Download and install the Aternity Agent on one or more devices or virtual servers.
  3. Step 3 Open a browser and log in to Aternity.
  4. Step 4 Start viewing the end user experience in the highly intuitive dashboards in SteelCentral Aternity™.

    In the top left corner, select Main Menu > and then choose the action you want to perform.

    Troubleshoot

    Troubleshooting a problem requires hunting for clues which cause the problem. Aternity's direct visibility on the end user device brings extraordinary clarity, by presenting data which is only available on the device itself, using intuitive and flexible dashboards to examine and isolate the cause of the problem.

    Validate

    When you change application deployments, network infrastructures or devices in your enterprise, it can have a massive impact. Use SteelCentral Aternity™ to assess and quantify that impact, to validate if your change brought better or worse performance for end users.

    Analyze

    You can test your own troubleshooting theories by finding common threads (correlations) between an application's performance and two or more attributes. Alternatively, you can use the Analyze (Advanced) dashboards to completely customize your layout from a blank canvas, for the ultimate flexibility to display complex correlations between as many attributes as you need.

    It's easy to locate a user or device and view the performance details, by performing one of several key searches.

  5. Step 5 Use the search box in the top bar to quickly start monitoring a device hostname, username or application, or enter the name of a dashboard.
