Key Task: Validate VDI Migration

You can validate a migration to virtual desktops (VDI) using Aternity. Your migration can be from regular desktops to VDI or from virtual applications to VDI.

There are several ways to do this:

To Do this...

To compare a regular desktop application to the same application on a VDI deployment

Use the Device Type Comparison dashboard.

To compare the performance of a virtual application (Citrix XenApp) to the same application on a VDI deployment

When you view an activity's response time in a VDI deployment, there are two separate times you must add: the regular application's response time on the VDI server itself (made up of the client time, server time and network time) and then add the remote display latency between the VDI server and the front line end user of the virtual desktop.

For any given activity response, if we assume that there is only one round trip from the client to the VDI server for the activity and its response (which depends on the architecture of the application deployed in VDI), the total response time of an activity would be:

VDI response time = (2 x remote display latency) + activity response time

Typically, however, the virtualization platform would use more than one round trip to the virtual application server or VDI server for each activity, so it would be many more than 2 x remote display latency.

Effective response time of a VDI end user

For more information on the latency time for this application, select Main Menu > Troubleshoot > Virtual Desktop and check the remote display latency there.

  1. Step 1 Open a browser and log in to Aternity.
  2. Step 2 Select Main Menu > Validate > VDI Migration.
    Accessing Validate Migration to VDI
  3. Step 3 Select the scope of the data displayed in the dashboard.

This dashboard compares the performance of a single application in two different deployments.

Defining the scope of view in the Device Type Comparison dashboard
    Field Description
Select the type of VDI migration

    Select one of the following:

    • From desktop to VDI compares a single application's deployment on a regular desktop computer to its deployment on a virtual desktop.

    • From Citrix XenApp to VDI compares a virtual application's performance to its deployment on a virtual desktop. Aternity only supports virtual applications on Citrix XenApp.

    Select the application

Select the application whose performance you are comparing. This dashboard only compares the performance of a single application. You can later switch to another application in the dashboard by selecting the Application menu at the top of the screen.

  4. Step 4 For more information on the Device Type Comparison dashboard, see Compare Application Performance on Different Device Types (Device Type Comparison).
