Analyze Application Crash Rate Trends (Experience Insights)

Use the Crash Rate dashboard for deeper analysis of Application Crashes across your organization and to improve productivity. By fixing hardware and software issues you will improve employees efficiency. The crash rate of an application is the average number of crashes which occurred in that application during an hour of active usage. It is calculated as the total number of crashes divided by the total usage time in hours.

Aternity proactively supplies you with Experience Insights from the collected data. Register and receive periodic emails with information about trends and shifts in your account to help drive better analysis and decision-making process. Alternatively, to leverage actionable insights to drive better business outcomes, you can open the Main Menu > Insights > Aternity Experience Insights Front Page and view this information directly from Aternity console any time without waiting for periodic emails. From the Insights Front Page, select the title of the insight you are interested to investigate and open its respective dashboard. Learn more about Aternity Experience Insights.

Aternity provides a dashboard for each insight with a competitive analysis and allows you to measure your company's performance against similar businesses over time. Even if benchmark analysis shows that your organization performance is excellent and much better than others, you may still have some problematic apps and/or devices and Aternity informs you what they are, so that you can take care of those apps and/or devices' health.

Fix issues to improve productivity

Customers may get up to 4 insight notifications (about high crash rate for each of four MS Office applications) comparing their organization’s performance with the industry average.

This set of insights will also translate the application experience metrics into a measure of the potential productivity gains that can be realized if the issue is addressed. These new capabilities can help drive better analysis and decision making when handling problematic applications in your organization.


  1. Step 1 Open a browser and sign in to Aternity.
  2. Step 2 Select Main Menu > Insights > Aternity Experience Insights.
  3. Step 3 Select one of the Crash Rate Insights.

    You can go back to the Experience Insights Front Page page at any time by selecting Insights in the dashboard title located at the top of the dashboard surface.

  4. Step 4 View data in every widget and make your conclusions.

    Field Description
    Severely Impacted Devices

    Displays percentage of impacted devices.

    The gauge indicates how the number of severely impacted devices in your organization compares to other Aternity customers. For example, 80% of companies have a greater percentage of impacted devices and 20% of companies perform better than you with a lower percentage of impacted devices.
    Crash Rate
    The gauge indicates the percentage of the industry benchmark you currently meet. For example, 80% of companies have a higher percentage of application crashes and 20% of companies have a smaller percentage of application crashes (for the application shown in the dashboard).
    Severely Impacted Devices Trend

    Displays the trend of impacted devices in your organization compared to the benchmark: How many devices out of total are impacted by an issue.

    Displays the following benchmarks for comparison: 50th (median) percentile, 33rd percentile, and 66th percentile.

    This widget displays also a benchmark line on the graph.

    Your company trend is orange , and the benchmark trend is blue .

    Crash Rate Trend

    Displays your trend over time, as well as the industry trend.

    The benchmark trend shows the 50th, 33rd and 66th percentiles.

    It is possible that your trend is very positive, that your company fixed the issues and improved performance, but still at some point on the graph you are worse than benchmark even though you have shown better performance than in the past. That means that the industry trend also changed and improved much more than your organization.

    Top 100 Severely Impacted Devices

    Displays the devices that Aternity has detected as the most affected by that issue (with the highest crash rate) and potential productivity gain if you fix that problem.

    Potential Productivity Gain means how many hours the company can save after fixing the issue on the most impacted devices.

    This widget displays the results of 2 calculations:
    1. The amount of hours an organization can save if fixing issues on all devices considered as severely impacted (listed in the Top X Severely Impacted Devices widget)
    2. The amount of hours an organization can save if devices' performance increases to the 75th percentile of the benchmark

    The blue pie wedge shows the impact from severely impacted devices (calculation (a)) above.

    Severely impacted devices contribute to the calculation in (b) and since we do not want to count that impact twice, the green pie wedge shows the difference between (a) and (b) or the additional hours that can be saved by reaching the 75th percentile, in case it cannot be achieved by fixing the issues on the severely impacted devices alone. The size of the two pie wedges give an indication of where to concentrate your efforts in reducing application crashes in order to get the most productivity gain.

    Commonalities (Euler Charts)
    These are a graphical representation of the intersections of the commonalities called out in the above statements. It shows the number of devices that are severely impacted having a specific attribute compared to the total number of devices having that same attribute while also showing the intersections between multiple attributes. The legend shows the labels A, B, C, etc. If you hover over an area of the chart it will show the “sets” (e.g. A,B) that make up that section and the number of devices in that section. This helps you identify the intersections you can see in the chart.

    Correlated Insights
    The Aternity algorithm analyzes the severely impacted devices in the current insight and checks if they are also impacted by other issues and triggered in more insights. For example, the device that suffers from high hang percent of MS Office applications can also be impacted by high CPU usage.
