New: Enterprise Summary Dashboard

The new Enterprise Summary dashboard is a faster alternative to the Monitor Enterprise Applications dashboard. It has fewer sections but appears quicker on the screen.

SteelCentral Aternity™ has a new look and feel, to match the Riverbed branding, with a new look for the login screen, top bar, main menu, popups, settings and help menu.

New: Monitor Skype for Business / Lync (Beta)

For devices with Agent for End User Devices 9.1.x or later, you can now monitor the user experience and quality of VOIP audio and video calls on Microsoft Skype for Business or Lync. This is now a default managed application which appears throughout the system, with several out-of-the-box predefined activities like launch time and sign in, and has the standard measurements of UXI, usage times, wait times, crashes and so on

Aternity also collects several unique measurements in Skype for Business or Lync, which are showcased in two brand-new dedicated Skype dashboards:

  • Call Details: Monitors the user experience and quality of audio and video calls in Skype/Lync from the perspective of each user participating in a call.

  • Analyze Skype for Business Calls: Analyze the data on the quality of VOIP calls in more detail, to hunt for correlations with other system attributes (like location, operating system, device type) or new attributes about Skype calls (like the version of Skype, type of call, the call mode, the type of headphones or microphone), and view additional measurements like degradation in quality, call duration and so on.

Call quality in Aternity centers around Microsoft’s MOS measurement (Mean Opinion Score), which assesses the jitter, background noise and other factors to determine the call quality for each participant in a call, on a scale from 0 to 5.

Enhanced Layout for Validate Change (beta)

There are several enhancements to the Validate Change (beta) dashboard, which tracks changes or gradual deployments in your enterprise:

  • Each section of the dashboard now has a side-by-side comparison of the attributes which improved most, next to those which had the biggest drop in performance, to help assess the full impact of the change and resolve any problems raised by the migration.

  • Other Validate Change enhancements:

    • The dashboard now shows data more clearly, with an improved layout and the removal of the summary bar.

    • Use the new Volume/Usage top menu to limit the display to the more significant changes.

    • Change several filters at once, then press Apply to see the effect in the dashboard.

    • The dashboard has extra sections for boot times, remote display latency, system health events or system and hardware health events per hour of use.

What’s New Inside the Product

When you log in after the system updated with new features, you see a What’s New panel showing a summary of the product’s new features. Browse through the content, and click the links for more detail. You can view this panel any time from the product’s help menu.

You can also view a detailed list of new features from the new links on the login screen, under the Log in button.

Updated Look for Managed Applications

The Managed Applications screen now sports a fresh look. Added applications stand out in bold, and they have dedicated icons to either remove the application, or (for web applications only) to add activities for the page load times. To edit the properties of a managed application, just select its name.

Single Sign On (SSO) for Aternity (Beta)

Users who log in once (SSO) with their company’s identity provider to access their enterprise systems can now also access Aternity in the same way. Contact Aternity SaaS Administration to configure your SSO (SAML 2.0) identity provider to work with Aternity. The process after that is completely automatic.

Additional Enhancements

  • The Validate Change dashboard (beta) now tracks more types of changes:

    • CPU Cores: Monitor the effects of changing devices to a different number of CPUs.

    • Memory Size: Monitor the effects of upgrading the size of RAM across devices.

    • OS Name: Monitor upgrades between minor versions of an operating system.

    In addition, when you hover your mouse over some measurements, you can now see additional details like volume and usage time. Try this dashboard now. Monitor the impact of a change by searching for Validate Change in the top bar, and send us your feedback to the Aternity Beta Team.

  • If the system is due to undergo some planned maintenance, the login screen includes a message of the upcoming times when the system will be unavailable.

  • The Device Health dashboard has minor changes in the names of the different crashes of Windows applications.

New Dashboard for Validating Large Deployments (Beta)

Validate the expense of an upgrade or migration with the Validate Configuration Change dashboard, which measures the impact by comparing performance before and after the upgrade. You can monitor upgrades for hardware (like moving users to SSD drives, or moving to laptops) or system changes (like migrating to Windows 10). Learn more

To monitor the change in the dashboard, you can first define the pool of devices to be upgraded (if you are not upgrading everyone), then define the change you want to make, and finally track the performance as you upgrade.

Save Advanced Analyze Dashboards

Return to your customized advanced Analyze dashboard, like the Analyze Applications (Advanced) dashboard, by saving it and sharing it with others, or subscribe to regular updates.

When you re-open the dashboard, it displays in view-only mode. Select Edit (if you have permissions) to further customize its layout and content.

Device Health Adds Mobile Apps

The newly named Device Health dashboard (used to be Desktop Health) now includes health events from both Windows devices and devices with monitored mobile apps. This adds to last month’s enhancements which included:

  • A new Geographies section shows the locations of health events on a map.

  • Application health events are now listed separately from Background Process health events, which are for processes with no UI.

  • You can now easily correlate a health event with a system attribute, by customize the lower four sections to show health events according to different attributes. Find a view where all the events seem to happen only with one attribute, for example, in all devices from the same manufacturer.

Additional Enhancements

  • The Analyze and Validate Change dashboards include a new attribute called Pilot Group, which allows you to create your own custom group of devices which undergo a change or upgrade. You can define pilot groups by editing the device's registry, configuring your enterprise LDAP, or by creating your own CSV mapping. Learn more

  • All dashboard tooltips have a new link called Copy Tooltip to Clipboard which copies the tooltip’s displayed data so you can paste it elsewhere.

This section lists the updates to Aternity SaaS August 2016.

Troubleshoot Users/Devices with Data up to 7 Days

You can now troubleshoot a device or user whose complaint was up to seven days ago (up from three days in previous versions). All seven days’ raw data for every event and its attributes are now held in the system for the following dashboards:

New: Limitless Analysis with REST API (Beta)

This release launches the beta of the system's new REST API, you can load Aternity data directly into Excel, Power BI, or your data application, without going through Aternity's dashboards.

  • Enter the URL in OData format directly into Excel or Power BI or in a web browser, to automatically load the data. Learn more.

  • Once loaded, you can combine it with other data sources, or export to other applications like Splunk, to analyze and transform it with your own data tools.

  • Simply select Refresh to view the latest performance data.

  • There are three APIs:

    • API_USER_ACTIVITY_HOURLY returns the list of activities performed in one-hour slots by a specific user on a specific device.

    • API_NOC_APPLICATION_CURR_SCORE for companies with their own NOC systems and want to display Aternity's data there. It returns activity scores and volumes per application per location, per department within that location. The volumes and scores are for the past five minutes, the past hour and the past 24 hours.

    • API_NOC_APPLICATION_HIST_SCORE returns the recent trend (history) of the activity scores. It returns many five-minute scores for each location, and each department within a location.

    • To send a REST API query in Excel, PowerBI or a browser, enter the URL of the REST API, your Aternity username (must have the OData REST API role) and its password. You can find this by selecting User icon > REST API Access. SSO users must generate (once) and use a special password, as Aternity's REST API does not authenticate with your enterprise's identity provider.

Enhanced Desktop Health Dashboard

The Desktop Health dashboard has a number of new features, including:

Enhancements to Adding Managed Applications

Now you can add managed applications more easily. Start typing the application name, and the system offers the details in a drop-down menu, if it was previously discovered.

  • Start typing the name of the application to choose the exact desktop process name.

  • Start typing a page URL to choose the correct base URL.

Improved Display of Top Processes

The Troubleshoot Device dashboard now lists the Top Processes with the date and time of each entry, so you can easily correlate it with the graph of CPU and memory usage.

Also, clicking on the graph at a single point in time is now also reflected in the Top Processes, which shows the readings at that time.

  • Performance improvements mean that dashboards load significantly faster.

  • Saving dashboards has now been extended to preserve any customized view, including when you select (filter) items to view only their data. Learn more.

  • The Sessions section in the Troubleshoot Device dashboard for application servers now shows the sessions connecting to it via RDP, as well as the existing ICA and PCoIP protocols.

  • The Commonalities Analysis and Analyze dashboards include several new attributes, including:

    • Network Speed is the maximum speed of the active network adapter on a particular network. For example, the speed of WiFi at home on a device, or the speed of the network port at the office.

    • OS Type is the family of operating systems, like iOS, or Microsoft Windows 8.

  • The online help features enhanced search with automatic stemming of words, where typing a word like installs yields results for all its English grammar forms, like install, installing, installation, installed and so on.

New: Monitored Mobile Apps with Usage Data

Monitored mobile apps now join other apps in the Monitor Enterprise Applications dashboard, with usage, health and performance data, like the UXI, usage time and wait time.

Monitored mobile apps also have a new Monitor Application dashboard, available from the Monitor > Application main menu. This redesigned dashboard matches the layout and concepts behind the other Monitor Application dashboards, offering you a seamless experience across all application types.

New Application Level Commonalities Analysis Dashboard

The popular and powerful Commonalities Analysis dashboard has taken a significant leap forward in this release, now offering its troubleshooting magic on any discovered application: desktop, web or mobile. Working at the level of an application, it finds common attributes for seemingly random problems across both managed and discovered applications on a wide range of usage, performance and health measurements.

You can also intelligently drill down to the Analyze Application dashboard, where the system automatically selects the relevant Measurement Group, application name, timeframe and breakdowns.

Improved NOC Dashboard

The Monitor NOC dashboard has a number of important updates, including:

  • Smarter sorting ensures the most important performance issues are at the top of the Applications list.

  • Any item with less than 10 instances does not have a status (colored gray).

  • The Now column covers the last 10 minutes of activity (more useful than only the past five minutes).

Improved Citrix XenApp Reporting

  • The Troubleshoot Device dashboard for virtual application servers now includes a section showing a graph of the recent sessions opened for that server.

  • The Device Details dashboard now includes extra details for Citrix XenApp servers, including the name of the XenApp farm, the XenApp edition and its version.

  • The default timeout of the system has been lengthened to 3.5 hours.

  • Chrome now reports usage time and wait time even when it does not have the Aternity Extension for Chrome installed

Subscribe and Share a Dashboard

Now you can share and subscribe others to your saved dashboards, so they can receive updates emails once a day/week/month, containing a PDF attachment of that dashboard with data at that time, and (for those who have a login to Aternity) a link to the live dashboard to view the latest data.

In the main menu, go to My Dashboards, then select Share and Subscribe for a saved dashboard. Then enter the email addresses to send the updates.

Troubleshoot Device Dashboard Lists All Applications

In the Troubleshoot Device dashboard, the Applications section now lists all applications, not just managed applications, so you can see the full range of activity on this device. For managed applications, you can see its activity response scores by hovering your mouse over one of the applications.

Enhanced Online Help Experience

Aternity's online help portal has a number of new features, including:

  • Find help quicker: Start typing a search and jump straight to the topic.

    Jump to a topic quickly by selecting a suggested item
  • In-box filtering: Limit your search for a given product right from the search box.

  • Metadata tags display at the top of every topic.

  • Send feedback more smoothly at the bottom of every help page.

  • Improved PDF export, with figures and logo at the header of each page.

  • Thinner search results boxes to fit more results into a single screen.

  • All-round performance enhancements (now hosted on faster servers).

  • When you switch between Measurement Group views in the Analyze Applications dashboard, the sidebar settings remain intact.

  • Improved performance for Analyze Applications and Commonalities Analysis dashboards.

  • Several new device details have been added to the system:

    • OS Architecture determines if the operating system is 32 or 64 bit.

    • Disk Type (System) determines if the hard disk with the operating system is HDD or SSD.

    • Days from Last Boot now groups the days since the last boot into more usable categories (up to 24 hours, 2-7 days, 8-14 days, 15-30 days, more than 30 days).

  • The User Experience dashboard features an enhanced pop-out window with more details of a response time, including the split between client/network/server time, and adds details about incoming and outgoing traffic during that activity.

    • Browsers are no longer listed as standalone applications. Instead, they are treated as containers for web apps.

Enhanced Security with Strong Passwords

All passwords must now be at least 8 characters long, with one uppercase (A-Z), one lowercase (a-z), one number (0-9) and one non-alphanumeric character (like @, #, $).
