What's New with Aternity on-premise 10.x

Version 10 of Aternity on-premise offers significant steps forward in functionality and features.

Deploy a clean setup of Aternity on-premise 10 (learn more) or update an existing Aternity to version 10 (learn more).

The new features of Aternity 10 are:

Monitor Calls in Microsoft Skype for Business/Lync

Monitor audio and video calls on Microsoft Skype for Business or Lync, to view the user experience and quality of VOIP calls. Skype is now a predefined managed application which appears throughout the system dashboards. Requires devices running Agent for End User Devices 9.1.x or later.

Call quality in Aternity uses the way a call ended, and Microsoft’s MOS measurement (Mean Opinion Score), which assesses the jitter, background noise and other factors to determine the call quality for each participant in a call, on a scale from 0 to 5.

Calls Commonalities Analysis

The Calls Commonalities Analysis dashboard for Skype performs automatic and intelligent troubleshooting on seemingly random problems in calls using Skype for Business, by finding the general and Skype-specific attributes (like the capture device) which are common to all instances of the problem. It checks through hundreds of possible culprits (like the location, or time of day, laptop model and many more), and displays only the highest concentration of poor performers.

Validate the expense of an upgrade or migration with the Validate Configuration Change dashboard, which measures the impact by comparing performance before and after the upgrade. Custom Analysis of Data

Aternity 10 allows safe and robust custom queries of Aternity data directly, without using the dashboards or risky back doors to the database. Troubleshoot your theories safely by creating your own data queries using:

  • You can save and share a customized dashboard, to revisit it any time in the Main Menu, or you can schedule to send regular email updates of your customized dashboard to stay proactive and catch any issues before they catch you. The subscription email has both a PDF attachment of the dashboard (containing frozen data), and also a link to the live dashboard, to view the saved view settings (menus at the top of the dashboard) with live data.

  • Use the Analyze Process Resources dashboard to find the managed applications on Windows and Mac that use the highest CPU and memory resources (PRC), which would slow down devices, and compare between applications or versions of an application to find the most efficient implementation (lowest PRC) in different operating systems or other attributes.

  • A new set of Analyze (Advanced) dashboards allow you to access all the stored attributes and measurements of the system, to customize your own dashboard layout to display the data which interests you.

    Use the full power of Aternity's dashboard engine, Tableau, to construct your own custom queries, create custom fields by combining measurements in your own way, create custom groups of devices or users, and compare their performance as you see fit.

    Then save your queries and dashboard layout to access it again at any time with the latest data.

  • The Analyze Application Events (Advanced) dashboard shows only application events, which you can create to report the number of errors or the number of times someone used a feature in your application, like accessing its online help. You create application events in the Aternity Activity Designer and upload it to Aternity in a similar way to a regular custom activity. This advanced analyze dashboard allows you to customize its layout, so you can correlate the occurrence of an application event with other system or application measurements, but it does NOT display regular activities, only application events.

    This dashboard is empty if you have not created and uploaded your application events.

Aternity REST API

An analyst or programmer can send REST API queries to directly extract and analyze Aternity's data without Aternity's dashboards. You can combine the data with other data sources if needed, or transform it as required, then view it in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, or your own data application.

For example, an analyst can automatically load the data into Microsoft Excel or Power BI by entering the OData URL. Then save and reopen as needed, selecting Refresh to update with the latest data. Alternatively, a programmer can send an OData URL request directly from the source code to retrieve the data, and then process it in the application as required.

SteelCentral AppInternals™

Troubleshoot a long backend time (part of a slow response time) of a user's activity, by drilling down from the activity into SteelCentral AppInternals™. In AppInternals you can trace an activity's call (AppInternals transaction) to the server as it crosses the server-side components, and follow it across the backend components. If the activity makes two calls to the same server, or to two different servers, you can drill down from this activity to trace two separate transactions.

SSO

Single Sign-On (SSO) brings the most secure access to Aternity by bypassing Aternity's sign in screen, and authenticating with your enterprise's chosen identity provider (IdP) just once using passwords, two-factor authentication (2FA), or even biometrics. Every time you access Aternity as an SSO user, it automatically reroutes you securely to the IdP, and then after authentication, it routes you back to your Aternity home page as a signed in user. SSO uses the secure SAML 2.0 protocol to delegate the entire authentication process to the IdP.

Time Zone Support for Device-Specific Dashboards

In dashboards which display details of a single monitored device, you can now view the data in the time zone of the device, or in your own time zone, or in the default time zone displayed in other Aternity dashboards.

The Incident List and Incident Details dashboards have a new look and feel, in line with other Aternity dashboards. The incident functionality is exactly as before.

Improved dashboard performance

Aternity 10 features a new database format better suited to quickly deliver data to the dashboards. Adding a Vertica database is an architectural shift which removes the old dashboard extracts, where data remained static, and frees up requirements on the Aternity Dashboard Server and Aternity Oracle Database Server. The Vertica Database Server is fully scalable, offers faster data retrieval, increased data refresh rates, and faster load times of dashboards.

Expanded Monitoring

Aternity on-premise 10 expands the range of performance monitoring in several key areas:

  • Monitor Windows devices on IP v6 networks. If a Windows PC is running Agent 10 or later and runs on a network with IPv6 addresses, Aternity now displays all IP and subnet addresses properly in IPv6 format.

    This applies to monitored devices only. All Aternity server setups must have IP v4 addresses.

  • You can now monitor the WiFi attributes of a device (running Agent for End User Devices 9.2.x or later), to correlate its performance with its WiFi connection, including the Wifi signal strength, the name of the Wifi network (SSID), channel and its network card address (BSSID).

Enhancements to Aternity Administration

  • Now you can add a new custom activity directly from the Managed Applications screen by selecting the application name to view its activities.

    You can also edit the properties of an existing custom activity directly, by selecting Edit on a single activity. Change an activity's name, rollout, incident detection settings, or SLA thresholds.

  • As Aternity Administrator of your enterprise, you can allocate licenses which you purchased using the new License Provisioning screen. It has a new look and feel to match the other Aternity screens, and has the following features:

    • The Total Licenses you purchased limits the number of monitored devices reporting to Aternity.

    • If required, you can limit the number of licenses allowed for each type of device.

    • You can manually assign licenses to any device type, so long as each type remains within its quota.

    • You can use a single license on a single physical device or on four virtual app sessions (each session is ¼ license).

    • Rejects displays the number of times the system rejected a device’s request to be monitored in the past 24 hours.
